Simarouba contains quassinoids, a group of chemicals that have been investigated for their active properties. Simarouba amara has a longstanding use as folk remedy for dysentery and diarrhea, malaria, intestinal worms and parasites, as an astringent to stop bleeding (internally and topically)

Recently, one of its active chemicals called glaucarubinone, has been investigated  for its possible ability to inhibit enzyme PAK-1 which plays a damaging role in several diseases such as cancer (mainly solid tumors), malaria, Alzheimer's disease, acquired immune deficiency syndrome and other viral/bacterial infections, inflammatory diseases (asthma and arthritis), diabetes (type 2), neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, epilepsy and many others.
